Compensation trends for hotel managers

There is a general impression that salaries in the hospitality industry are low, and that hotel managers are paid a salary lower than in some other attractive sectors, such as call centres. While there may be some truth in this at face value, there are many factors of the subject to be considered to gain a proper perspective. The table below shows estimated current salary range (in mid 2005) of heads of departments (HOD) in 5 star hotels in india , based on the Hospitality Compensation Survey released by HVS International, India office, in October 2003. HVS International, based in New York and with other offices in various countries, is a global consultancy company specializing exclusively in the hospitality industry. As the figures show, the salary and benefits being earned by good hotel managers are very handsome.

Notes :

1. This data relates to hotels with more than 200 rooms, which would normally come in the 5-star category. Compensation levels in lower category hotels may be lower, depending on star rating, the city and the perceived reputation of the hotel.

2. The median base salary means that 50% of managers in this category are earning this annual amount; 25% are earning less and 25% more.

3. The list of benefits, which are additional to salary, include only three kinds of benefits, including bonus, retrials (P.F., gratuity and superannuation), medical and LTC . Many hotels give other benefits, such accommodation, transport, uniform allowance, and appliances purchase allowance etc. This would be additional to the figures given above. The data on the number of years required to reach these positions from the beginning of the career has been supplied by Mr. Sanjeev Sethi, Corporate Director of Human Resources, The Imperial Hotel, New Delhi . Fast-track growth applies to those managers who show high performance and achieve quick promotions. Middle-track refers to those who are medium performers but are still able to earn promotion.
